"A frank, revealing look into the world of animal shelters, “The Holders” asks viewers to confront some unpleasant facts that most pet lovers prefer to ignore: the distressing numbers of unwanted cats and dogs left in the care of overwhelmed animal-control and humane facilities. Abandoned by owners for a variety of usually selfish reasons, these former pets fill the cages and runs of shelters nationwide, with most facing euthanasia rather than finding new homes. Stressed shelter workers are thus left with the grim task of cleaning up the vast mess left by irresponsible owners. Centered on the Miami-Dade County Animal Services shelters, whose compassionate staff is admirably progressive in both operations and attitudes, “The Holders” offers an especially thorough examination of the situation in that specific community, but the subjects that the film explores are sadly universal and equally relevant to St. Louis. Providing a truly comprehensive view of shelter problems and potential solutions, “The Holders” refuses to censor the terrible realities of the present but offers hope for a better future by focusing on the growing no-kill movement and promising alternatives to traditional sheltering approaches."
