“Flying Into Gravity Skills” focuses on developing and maintaining the
body's fluent and weightless movement patterns. Different exercises are exploring the relationship with the floor as well as towards other people, space, gravity, and towards one's own mindset while experiencing oneself in the present moment. The body is being given the opportunity to activate the relationship between the center and the periphery with the aim of moving more efficient and using the ground as well as the gravity as support. Cruz explores the principals of recreating movements of daily life and exploring the influences of voice onto the body ́s movement. Figuring out what the body has to say in the moments when it doesn’t move and doesn’t produce sound is one of the main approaches, which is being achieved through dynamic dance sequences, partnering work and diverse techniques including Flying Low and Release Technique. Answers are appearing, when we calm down the mind but open the space for the body to talk. Cruz Isael Mata was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Instante únicos \ Workshop by CND Costa Rica
|
In this workshop, we will focus on developing improvisation tools that will allow you to express yourself authentically and uniquely, using your own qualities, perceptions of time, and personal rhythm.
The National Dance Company (CND), founded on July 10, 1979, under the direction of the visionary Maestra Elena Gutiérrez, has been a beacon of contemporary dance in Costa Rica. Conceived as a representative professional artistic expression of the Government, the CND has been committed since its inception to the professionalization and dissemination of dance in the country. In the year 2000, the company evolved to become an artistic program of the prestigious Melico Salazar Popular Theater, both under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Youth of Costa Rica. From its beginnings, one of the main objectives of the CND has been to bring the general public closer to this form of artistic expression through programming and extension workshops throughout the country. The CND currently consists of three fundamental areas: artistic, administrative, and technical. The artistic ensemble is composed of professional dancers and ballet and contemporary dance teachers, accompanied by a professional pianist for technical classes. In the administrative sphere, there is general and artistic direction, administration, communication, artistic production, secretariat, and general services. Finally, the technical area has professionals in charge of logistics in the hall and on stage, lighting, sound, set design, ticketing, and customer service. With its 45 years of experience, the CND has garnered numerous national and international awards and recognitions, both for its artistic excellence and for the quality of its choreographic proposals. The company has brought its art to multiple countries, representing Costa Rica in international artistic festivals and strengthening cultural ties worldwide. With an unwavering commitment to dance and culture, the CND continues to be an undisputed reference in the Costa Rican artistic scene at the legal, professional, and artistic levels.

This workshop is about movement and improvisation.
In the first part we will be focusing on movement. How to tune in. How to go beyond external influences and stimulus to find a more authentic and personal approach to movement. How we, as individuals and as a group define movement vocabulary. How do we create shapes and where do they come from. The second part of this workshop is focused on improvisation. We will be breaking down what are the main components of improvisation . Structure, development, spontaneity, listening, presence and risk taking are amongst some of concepts that we will be exploring individually in order to have a deeper understanding of them. At the end of this workshop we hope that students find in themselves a more confident and enjoyable experience with improvisation and a deeper more clear awareness of their own physicality. A man grapples internally with making a decision: to stay where he is and betray himself, or to embark on his own path and hurt the most important person in his life. Traveler seeks to lay the groundwork for an individual's process of 'burying' his own mother, and in the course of that journey, he aspires for the movement to help him understand the inherent contradictions in every relationship and the cycles of life itself.

An immersive performance for one, "Huellas" is inspired by the site activation Terra Firma that was first presented in January 2022 at the Deering Estate, Miami, FL. Performed by Stephanie Bastos with a spoken word by Betty Osceola of the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida Panther Clan, Huellas is a work that honors the land and shares the teachings of our native neighbors. A moving prayer and meditation, the VR performance gives each guest an opportunity to be still and reflect on their contributions to this land and the legacy they wish to leave behind. Encapsulated within the last remaining hammocks in the city center of Miami, "Huellas" gives a glimpse to the past while inspiring us to be proactive stewards for the future.

'Face to Face' is an improvised piece that attempts truth within performance by creating circumstances for the actors to live under during a take and 'see what happens,' no script. After each take we would discuss what happened and add new ideas/motivations or take things away, and run again, and again and again. The 6 minute film is made predominantly of two single takes with one edit point in the middle. To light the scene we used the lights inside my car, the battery died at the end of the night as a result, we had to walk.

Director: Joan Carol Gratz
Producer: Joan Carol Gratz Joan Gratz is an Academy Award winning director of animated short films and commercials. Her films range in content through painterly expressions of poetry, improvised abstraction, and animated social documentary. The technique she pioneered is “Claypainting.” Working directly before the camera, she applies bits of clay, blends colors and etches fine lines to create a seamless flow of images. In Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase, images of the human face are transformed to communicate the graphic style and emotional content of major 20th century art works. This animated history of art won the Oscar in 1992. Joan developed animated painting when an architecture student at the University of Oregon, then shifted from paint to clay while working with Will Vinton Studios. During that time, her work included design and animation for the Academy Award Nominees Return to Oz, Rip Van Winkle, and The Creation. She established her own studio, Gratzfilm, in 1987. In addition to films she is the author of Downward-facing Frog and My Tesla. Joan has served on major film festival juries in Asia, Europe, and North America. Joan lives on a houseboat in Portland, Oregon.

"Ripe" examines the politics of women’s bodies as they are hyper-sexualized in media and culture—bodies on the front lines of pleasure-selling industries. Commercial and porn industries shape, distort, and dehumanize our sexuality, sense of identity, desires, sexual norms, ideas of pleasure, and relationships. This aesthetic phenomenon affects our body image across the spectrum of female-identified and gender nonconforming bodies. The work pushes for greater awareness: What are the consequences of this phenomenon?
