305 & HAVANA INTERNATIONAL IMPROV FEST (5th Edition)

29/4/2021

Miami, FL - 305 HAV INTERNATIONAL IMPROV FEST ’21 is a festival that promotes the art of improvisation in performance and film. This year 305 & Havana International Improv Fest presents screenings and performances that deepen into the art of improvisation, bringing together performing artists, filmmakers and audiences across the city. This year partnering venues includes the Miami-Dade County Auditorium (Miami, Florida) and O Cinema South Beach (Miami Beach).

In the life of a stage or creative space, improvisation is considered an instrument for exploration and a tool for expanding creative possibilities. Open-ended investigation into the art of improvisation in different artistic expressions has become a tool that has no limits in the search for an authentic language through movement or ideas.

Every year, the festival commissions a Miami-based artist to present a new improvisation work. This year, the choreographers and dancers Heather Maloney and Liony Garcia have been commissioned with their pieces “HERE” and “UP IN THE CLOUDS”

How long a disaster last  (Brazil, 2020, 1 minute 34 seconds)
Director Renata de Lélis, Edu Rabin, Key Cast Renata de Lélis
This material was captured in October 2019, at Moreré beach, Bahia. We wanted to speak, to translate, the despair of that environment in the urgency of the arrival of oil that plagued the Northeast coast. It was happening, it happened ...
We've assembled the material far away, in the quarantine, wondering ... how long a disaster lasts...We just assembled the material here in the quarantine, wondering ... how long a disaster lasts …

The current world in a moving body. Depressed, it is pulled to the ground by gravity. Angry, it has spasms. To transform itself, it mimics the mythical phoenix with sequin feathers and a mask.

Helen at Thirroul Beach (Australia, 2020, 1 minute 22 seconds)
Director Lisa Maris McDonell, Producer Proper Motion, Key Cast Helen Johnstone, Sound Lisa Maris McDonell

It was made in the first week of April 2020 while almost 2 billion people around the globe were unable to move freely due to the restrictions imposed in an attempt to prevent the spread of the CoronaVirus.

Don't Shout at Me  (United States of America, 2020, 5 minutes)
Director Joanne Barrett, Writer Lucia Aratanha & Joanne Barrett, Key Cast Joanne Barrett
A woman caught in a whirlwind to free herself from a long term controlling and abusive relationship finds, like the egg she is hard and reduced, and longs for liberation from the immediate relationship, but also from her own doubts and fears. The film is a result of movement improvisation within a predetermined structure. The choreography was highly informed by the locations and the relationship between performer and camera.

Superficie (United States of America, 2020, 2 minutes 40 seconds)
Director Sandra Portal-Andreu, Mateo Serna Zapata, Producer Sandra Portal-Andreu, Choreographer Sandra Portal-Andreu, Cinematographer Mateo Serna Zapata, Editor Mateo Serna Zapata, Composer Sandra Portal-Andreu, Performer Sandra Portal-Andreu

Written and Directed by Carla Forte
Based on the play "Rictus" written by Vicente Forte

The film shows the creative process between a director and an actress while they rehearse a play called "Rabbit". Two stories are narrated in the midst of demanding rehearsals in total isolation: The creation of a character, and the daily lives of those involved. Psychological abuse and mistreatment by the director, end up bringing the actress to the point where her deepest desires merge into the character she represents: the rabbit.

CARLA FORTE AND ALEXEY TARAN
 LIFE AS IMPROV

By Jordan Levin

Picture
Improvisation is not only at the heart of artist couple Carla Forte and Alexey Taran’s work, but how they live. They’ve hopscotched from Cuba to Venezuela to New York to Europe to Miami, always looking for new ways to create, live and stay true to what they love.“As an artist and a human being I try to live in the here and now,” says Alexey, a choreographer and dancer. “This is one of the things keeping me alive and working.”

Their ability to respond in the moment has served them well as the Covid-19 pandemic has kept the pair at home in their historic Little Haiti house, together with Carla’s elderly parents and their pet cats and dogs. And they’ve transformed their 305 and Havana International Improv Festival, which Miami Light Project was slated to present at the Light Box in Wynwood in April, into an online event celebrating artist responses to the unprecedentedly strange situation the world is enduring.

“Daily life is improvisation,” says Carla, a filmmaker and dance artist. “We have a score, but we don’t know what’s going to happen in an hour, or a minute. Right now the world is in a big important dangerous improvisation. We want to create something where artists can share the moment they are living right now.”

“We are living in a unique time,” adds Alexey. “So we are adapting, because we have to survive as artists and human beings.”

The Improv Festival will now take place this weekend, with a Handcrafted Film Conference, a workshop with filmmaker Dinorah de Jesus Rodriguez, at 7pm on Friday May 1st; and an Online Film and Media Screening Event, featuring original experimental films and dance videos from artists in Miami, Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, Spain, Italy and more, at 7pm on Saturday May 2nd.

Carla and Alexey have been part of the Miami Light Project family of artists since they were first commissioned for the Here & Now Festival over a decade ago, presenting multiple dance, film and hybrid projects since. This year they became one of the AIR (Artist in Residence) at the Light Box creators, receiving support and rehearsing at the Wynwood space.

Their fluid, immersive sensibility fascinates executive director Beth Boone.

“I find Alexey and Carla to be the quintessential artists in that there’s no separation between their daily lives and their artmaking,” Beth says. “If they’re cooking, caring for their dogs, or having dinner with their family, a film is being created in Carla’s head and choreography is being planned out in Alexey’s brain.”

Dear 305 & Havana IIF community,

It is with great sadness that we announce the postponement of 305 & Havana IIF'20  Given the rapidly changing situation regarding the spread of COVID-19, and recommendations from State and Local government officials against large public gatherings, we feel this is the best decision for the health and safety of our artist and our communities in Miami and Havana.

305 HAV INTERNATIONAL IMPROV FEST '19
Workshop

HAVANA, CUBA

WORKSHOP/ by Osmani Tellez
The creative muscle. For a Performer Improvisation can have some pre-existing ideas, very specific intentions or nothing at all but it will always allow you to include your own voice and to be part of the creative process. It will give you some freedom or a lot of freedom but also the same amount in responsibility in the outcome of the performance. In this workshop we will explore with the performer some of the fundamentals of improvisation and how to better take advantage of the endless possibilities that it has to offer. We will also come up with some tools to help us navigate this process of exploration and self expression and exercises  to strengthen our own creative muscles.

The workshop will be broken down into four main parts:
  • How to prepare the body and mind the right way
  • Looking for extructures outside and inside and how to respond to them.
  • less is more: how to allow space for things to happen.
  • The shapes of your mind: how we think about right or wrong defines how we create shapes. The unknown can be intimidating but also very rewarding if approached in the right way. Improvisation gives us an opportunity  to reconnect with our own creative nature.

Osmani Tellez (Miami, FL, US)
Osmani Tellez was born in Holguin, Cuba and he graduated from The National School of Arts (Havana) as a Dancer, teacher and Choreographer. He’s first work as a professional Dancer was with the company Danza Abierta, directed by Marianela Boan with whom he had the opportunity to perform in Cuba, Colombia and Venezuela. In 1991 Tellez took residency in Venezuela and here he continues his profesional career working with companies like Danza Hoy, Rajatabla Danza and Neodanza and in this latest is where he has his first experience as a teacher and a choreographer as well. In his time in Neodanza he created various personal works as well as others in collaboration with Alexey Taran and this work was presented in Venezuela, Colombia and USA. Tellez first experience as an independent artist was working with the recognized dancer and choreographer David Zambrano with whom he takes his first steps in the world of Improvisation and Release Technique and from here a new passion develops for him. In 1996 Tellez moved to New York City where he was also introduce to a variety of new styles and tendency that soon became part of his own physicality. Among the artists that he worked with were, Tim Feldman, Bo Madvig, Kirstie Simson, Jennifer Monson, Cathy Weis, Chamecki- Lerner, Mia Lawrence, Jeremy Nelson and Yvonne Meier. Since his first time working with David Zambrano for Tellez improvisation was always present in his career, either working with some improvisers or participating regularly in the Improvisation Festival of New York City, at Judson Church or in Amsterdam invited by Zambrano. Improvisation was also present in his own choreography which was presented by Movement Research and St. Mark’s Church. It was in NYC also where Tellez got to connect with his other passion: gymnastics. He had the great pleasure to work for 5 years with the troupe Circus Amok, performing every summer in the city.

“We are very excited with this new challenge for us and for ANN,” said Carla Forte, writer and director of ANN. “the film has given us incredible rewards and recognition. We are looking forward to giving it new life with this adaption. What a better way to close this cycle than to performing it for Miami at such an iconic venue as is the Miami-Dade County Auditorium.”

The stage adaptation of ANN will be a mix-media piece that will be merge projection of some film extracts with a live performance. Reprising the role of Ann will be Venezuelan actor Carlos Antonio Leon, and back in the role of Ruben will be Jose Manuel Dominguez. The bilingual piece (English and Spanish) will be 60 minutes long and feature subtitles.

The performance is produced by Bistoury Physical Theatre and Film, Ouija Films, Prop Planet & Theye Film Production with the support of O cinema, FilmGate Interactive, Miami Film Development Project, The Coral Gables Art Cinema, Inkub8, MU2 Productions, Navaja Pictures, Antiheroes Project, Carbon Wynwood, and The Writer´s Room at the Betsy South Beach Hotel.

SYNOPSIS:
ANN is the stage play version of the feature film ANN narrating the story of Ruben, a visual artist who has decided to abandon his tormented life by taking refuge within his own imagination; creating a world parallel to reality, which distances him from all material and emotional attachment, thus exorcising his ego.

His wife Ann, in the face of a deteriorating relationship, attempts to understand Ruben's idealized world; however, her husband's physical and psychological degradation unravels a terrible confusion between reality and his imaginarium (imaginary world), which inevitably will force him to choose which world to belong to before it is too late.

BISTOURY PHYSICAL THEATER & FILM ANNOUNCES 305 INTERNATIONAL IMPROV FEST ‘18

1/5/2018

Miami, FL - 305 INTERNATIONAL IMPROV FEST 2018 is a festival that promotes the art of improvisation in performance and film. Taking place during three consecutive weeks in Miami, Trinidad and Havana, the 305 & Havana International Improv Fest presents master classes by international artists, curated screenings and performances that deepen into the art of improvisation, bringing together performing artists, filmmakers and audiences across three cities. Partnering venues includes the Miami-Dade County Auditorium On.Stage Black Box Theatre (Miami, Florida), Historical Center of Trinidad (Trinidad, Cuba) and Fabrica de Arte Cubano (Havana, Cuba).

In the life of a stage or creative space, improvisation is considered an instrument for exploration and a tool for expanding creative possibilities. Open-ended investigation into the art of improvisation in different artistic expressions has become a tool that has no limits in the search for an authentic language through movement or ideas.

Every year, the festival commissions a Miami-based artist to present work across the three cites. This year, dance and performance artist Lazaro Godoy has been commissioned with her piece  “刀”. This commission is made possible by the support of Vivian Marthell, Co-director of O Cinema.

Participants in the film program include celebrated Miami artists Niurca Marquez, Roxana Barba and Pioneer Winter, as well as artists from all over the world: Ainhoa Rodríguez (Spain), Tanin Torabi (Iran), Federica Foglia (Canada, Italy), Charlie Ford (US), Kelly Hargraves (Canada), Jordan Fuchs and Yeajean Choi (US) and Cesar Saavedra (Cuba).

MIAMI – May 1-5, 2018
MDCA On.Stage Black Box Theatre

WORKSHOP: Emotional Improvisation and Point of View in Scenic Writing, led by Cuban filmmaker Kiki Alvarez. This workshop will explore emotional improvisation from the performers’ point of view as it relates to scenic writing. The focus will be on improvisation exercises that address how to structure the premise, characters and conflict, choosing and creating the camera’s ‘point of view’. Participants will also learn how to stage confronting points in a dramatic event and in its staging. Equal attention will be given to the visible actions in a scene and the hidden/internal conflicts of the characters.

Kiki Alvarez (Havana, Cuba)
Mr. Alvarez graduated with a Bachelor of Art History from the University of Havana. He also studied Communications Theory and Film Dramaturgy. He is the Head of the Department of Fiction Direction at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV). His initial works, “Espectador y Amor y Dolor", are considered the first examples of Cuban video art. Other works such as “Sed” and the feature film "La ola", winner of two Coral Awards, are also considered important works of Cuban experimental cinema. “Giraffes" (2012) won the Spirit Awards at the Brooklyn Film Festival and the protagonists of Venice (2014) shared the Ibero-American Best Actress Award at the Guadalajara Film Festival in 2015. Venice was awarded five Kikito awards at the Gramado Film Festival 2015, awarded to the three actresses, to the best cinematography and to the best director. His latest film Sharing Stella, is a self-referential piece that moves between the borders of fiction and documentary.
