--Hans Morgenstern This month, The Miami Beach Cinematheque will hold its seventh installment of its Knight Foundationsponsored discussion series called Speaking In Cinema. Usually, the bi-monthly event features a local film critic, an out-of-town film critic and a guest filmmaker (this writer was one of the first guest critics). This time they are bringing together three Miami-based filmmakers for a very special installment of the series, and this is the first in what will be a series of interviews with the three filmmakers, who are all showing films in a retrospective series leading up to their talk. Meet Carla Forte. Not too long ago, this writer reviewed the Hungarian film White God (White God takes the easy route to schlock over allegory– a film review). The most impressive thing about the movie was how the filmmakers wrangled 200 dogs and sent them marauding through the streets of Budapest. There was another film shown a few months earlier at the Miami International Film Festival that had a similar scene, Forte’s documentary The Holders. In it she explores the fate of many animals left at animal shelters (it’s often not pretty). Forte makes no apologies for the film’s bias toward animal rights. Writing via email, she says, “We need people in shelters who believe in not killing and who can confront the problem with compassion and respect.” Read more » THE HOLDERS and INTERRUPTA @ Miami Beach Cinematheque as part of “S P E A K I N G I N C I N E M A” With special guests Filmmakers CARLA FORTE JILLIAN MAYER MONICA PEÑA and Filmmaker Magazine Editor in Chief SCOTT MACAULAY Discussing Miami Female Filmmakers: Three Points of View ECTOTHERMS, RESET, I AM YOUR GRANDMA, HEARTS OF PALM, #POSTMODEM, THE HOLDERS, LIFE & FREAKY TIMES OF UNCLE LUKE, INTERRUPTA, MAKEUP TUTORIAL: HOW TO HIDE FROM CAMERAS Made possible by the generous support of the John S. and James L. "A frank, revealing look into the world of animal shelters, “The Holders” asks viewers to confront some unpleasant facts that most pet lovers prefer to ignore: the distressing numbers of unwanted cats and dogs left in the care of overwhelmed animal-control and humane facilities. Abandoned by owners for a variety of usually selfish reasons, these former pets fill the cages and runs of shelters nationwide, with most facing euthanasia rather than finding new homes. Stressed shelter workers are thus left with the grim task of cleaning up the vast mess left by irresponsible owners. Centered on the Miami-Dade County Animal Services shelters, whose compassionate staff is admirably progressive in both operations and attitudes, “The Holders” offers an especially thorough examination of the situation in that specific community, but the subjects that the film explores are sadly universal and equally relevant to St. Louis. Providing a truly comprehensive view of shelter problems and potential solutions, “The Holders” refuses to censor the terrible realities of the present but offers hope for a better future by focusing on the growing no-kill movement and promising alternatives to traditional sheltering approaches." http://cinemastlouis.org/sliff/2015/holders Official Selection Los Angeles CineFest (Sept, 2015) Festival Internacional de Cine de Guayaquil (Sept 5-12, 2015) Talashimaii ::: At Dot Fiftyone Gallery FUTURE WORLD : UNKNOWN [a] iiiPoints Activation by LEAD Miami and Wynwood Records. Talashimaii is a visual work that combines dance with the quotidian, taking simplicity as its starting point. Dance driven from the subconscious, authentic movement that emerges from the essential and indispensable; dancing as a human and social need. The daily routine of quotidian actions within a lifestyle of simplicity regarding material necessities, where emotions become protagonists and take ownership of every scene. Talashimaii brings in low-income individuals and families of Valledupar, Colombia, common people without great material pretensions who narrate their own stories through movement and through quotidian actions from daily routine, where emotions will serve as the vehicle to take spectators into an inner world to be reunited with themselves.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MASTERMIND 2015 WINNERS: TM SISTERS, BISTOURY THEATRE, AND RANDY BURMAN Last night the creative set gathered together at the Coral Gables Museum to honor our ten MasterMind 2015 finalists and crown the three winners. Or at least hand them a check for $1,000. We'd like to congratulate our three winners: performance artists TM Sisters, experimental dance company Bistoury Theatre, and artist Randy Burman. See also: Rise of the MasterMinds: Meet the Ten Astounding 2015 Finalists All of our ten nominees displayed their work inside the museum, from paintings to film, dance, music, and video installation. See also: MasterMind 2015 Finalist: TM Sisters The TM Sisters are a fixture on Miami's art scene. Their dazzling and at times overwhelming installations are virtually synonymous with a Miami aesthetic. The TMs have been MasterMind finalists before, and we were happy to finally give them one of this year's giant checks. See also: MasterMind 2015 Finalist: Bistoury Theatre Bistoury Theatre, an experimental dance company co-founded by Alexey Taran and Carla Forte, is likely one of the more recent additions to the Miami art scene. The company made its way to South Florida in 2007, after receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship. New Times is thrilled to contribute to the development of Bistoury's singular and challenging vision. See also: MasterMind 2015 Finalist: Randy Burman Randy Burman is a bit of dabbler. He's worked in dozens of mediums, but it was his guerrilla installation of poetry-as-street-signs done in conjunction with O, Miami that really garnered everyone's attention. Last night Burman showed the mock-ups for poems that didn't quite make the cut. And like the poems installed, they were smart and funny. Congratulations, again to all of our winners and to our ten finalists. Ready for showing TRIBE`s teaser @ Wynwood Warehouse Project Miami Mix 2014 Art Basel Week

It is translated by a new form of communication and language through body gestures, serving as an escape from the established social order. It is a creative experience fusing and integrating contemporary dance theatre and film, narrating the story of Ana and Ruben, who have decided to abandon his tormented life by taking refuge within their own imagination, which distances them from all material and emotional attachment, thus exorcizing his ego.
